Clarinet Lessons

Who Should Take Lessons?

Lessons are useful for any individual who wishes to expand their musical proficiency. It is a great place to learn more about the mechanics of an instrument, how the body is involved in creating sound, ear development, and overall development and education in musicianship, music history, and theory. Lessons help any student in band or orchestra perform better in school (chair assignments, Solo/Ensemble, All-District, All-State, etc) and they are a great place for older individuals to either learn an instrument that they have always wanted to play or to start playing again. Lessons are beneficial for both the younger and older player and provides an opportunity for growth at the beginner and advanced stages.

My Lesson Structure

The lessons I teach are structured around technique, tonal development, and musicianship.  Every lesson is tailored to the individual and their needs and goals. The main objective is to develop the skills necessary to become self sufficient so that they can eventually become their own teacher and continue to hone the skill sets required to succeed as a clarinetist and musician.  This is achieved by developing effective practice skills and strategies such as critical thinking, problem solving, time management, dedication, perseverance, attentive listening, and smart practicing. Majority of the lesson time is spent on etudes, exercises, solo works, and sight-reading.

Expectations/Requirements

In order for individuals to get the most from lessons there are expectations for both the student and the teacher.  I expect students to practice assignments at home throughout the week, not just the day before.  Students are expected to practice consistently throughout the week, even if it’s for only 15 minutes a day, and to own proper tools such as a metronome, tuner, stand, playable reeds (no chips and definitely no less than 4), swab, cork grease, and music.  I am more than happy to provide information or assistant in picking out appropriate equipment.  In turn, I will be attentive to the student’s needs and provide clear and appropriate instruction.  I will also be available via email or text/phone for any questions or concerns. Please note, if a student needs/wants help with band/orchestra music I am more than happy to coach them; however, lessons will not be structured around them.

Rates

I offer 30, 45, and 60 minute lessons and I travel to the student.  Rates are $30, $40, and $50 respectively.  Payment can be made at each lesson or at the beginning of each month. Accepted forms of payment include cash, check, and PayPal. There is a 24 hour cancellation policy.  With the exception of medical, family, and environmental emergencies, lessons must be cancelled in advance.  If not properly cancelled, the student is still responsible for payment of that lesson.

Lessons via Skype are also available.  Please contact me for further information regarding online lessons.
